Romantic winter engagement photography is possible in the Hudson Valley.
Who says you can't have a beautiful winter engagement photography session in New York? Those who think it's not possible, are not aware of the range of possibilities that comes with winter. At our studio we believe every season has it's own distinct beauty. In this post I'd like to illustrate why (in my opinion) there are several misconceptions about the winter season.
Beautiful images in the northern regions are pretty only in the summer - FALSE. This is far from the truth. The facts are that you don't need pretty flowers, lush greenery, and 85 degree weather for a good photo-shoot. Actually, a winter landscape can be very romantic, as you may see things that are not usually seen--like the fog and snow. For instance, during my last shoot in December, the fog played an important character in this engagement session. As I photographed this couple the fog surrounded the couple like a cozy blanket and then as we moved throughout the session it laid at their feet as if they were walking on clouds. In winter, the colors can also be stunning as the sun is low on the horizon, while the naked branches of the barren trees form a spectacular texture.
You can't take good photos of people in cold weather - FALSE. Actually colder weather make to people in love look even cozier - they tend to seek more warmth from the other person with great embraces. When it comes to a winter engagement photography session, the love story comes alive as the couple is even more into one another and the touch of the person they love. Yes, the cold may be unpleasant but we don't plan outdoor engagement sessions on days when it is below zero either. That said, cold weather engagement shoots may not be for everyone. However, if you dress warmly you'll be pleasantly surprised at what a winter landscape can bring to an engagement portrait or you can wait for a warmer spell if their is an opportunity. It is always helpful to plan ahead and be prepared for being outside by wearing appropriate clothing, which bring me to the next point.
There is nothing pretty that you can wear in the winter - FALSE. The fashion industry sure does not agree with this statement. Just take a stroll in the mall near you at the beginning of the season, and you'll notice a great variety of seasonal clothing starting with beautiful overcoats. For inspiration just watch a few episodes of Mad Men. Don't believe me? The proof is on the pages of any fashion magazines. There you'll find so see many different shoots that were done outdoors in a winter scene, with beautiful winter clothing.
In conclusion, I believe that a love story can be punctuated by a variety of details that are unique to the couple's romance. A winter engagement photography shoot can be a great option for those who are seeking something more unique.
